Devon Chan completed her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (Honours) at the University of Victoria. Through her schooling and volunteering at various clinics, Devon has become passionate about working in the rehabilitation field. At the beginning of 2016, Devon joined the Shelbourne Physiotherapy team as a Junior Kinesiologist, where she instructed Aquatherapy and Senior’s Gym Rehabilitation classes. In this position, she learned from a multidisciplinary team of kinesiologists and physiotherapists, which lead her to develop a holistic and patient-centered approach to care. As a Kinesiologist, Devon aims to help others gain functional independence and confidence through rehabilitation and education.
Devon is also involved with a research project through the Motion, Mobility and Rehabilitation Laboratory at the University of Victoria that focuses on predicting the fall risk status of community-dwelling older adults. Devon thoroughly enjoys working with the geriatric population, and has gained experience and understanding of the physical and cognitive barriers associated with age. She strives to encourage movement confidence and incorporate her research experiences into her work.
Devon is also trained in utilizing the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) program for her clients. FMS is a dynamic assessment tool, evaluating multiple body segments in fundamental movement patterns. FMS identifies faulty movement patterns and imbalances allowing for the development of corrective strategies.
In her spare time, Devon remains actively involved with the dance community. From 2009 to 2012, she had the opportunity of representing Victoria each year in the BC Performing Arts Provincials for Stage Dance. It was through dance that she developed an appreciated for human movement and an interest in exploring the human body. Her experience with injuries and the subsequent barriers also peaks her interest in injury rehabilitation.
Devon works with the team at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre Clinic, representing Shelbourne Physiotherapy and Massage, teaching pool and gym rehabilitation classes.
