What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a specific form of treatment conducted in a heated pool. The warmth and buoyancy of the water can help to reduce muscle spasm, increase circulation and decrease pain. Together with the effect of the warmth of the water, hydrotherapy provides an environment which encourages and facilitates movement. It is particularly beneficial for people of all ages who suffer from injuries or musculoskeletal conditions that are easily aggravated by weight-bearing or land based exercises. Hydrotherapy exercises can be very gentle and easier than on land, due to the buoyancy properties of water. By increasing balance and decreasing the risk of aggravation, clients are confidently able to improve strength, flexibility, postural control and mobility. All exercises are performed with the head above water and closely supervised or assisted at all times.
- Muscular relaxation
- Buoyancy of water counters the effects of gravity
- Increased muscle strength, general fitness level and endurance due to greater resistance in water
- Improvement in swelling due to hydrostatic pressure
- Improved balance and core stability
- Improved posture
- Improved heart and lung function
- Relief of tension
Conditions which will benefit from hydrotherapy include:
- Back pain
- Pre-operative strengthening for joint replacement
- Post-operative rehabilitation for joint replacement, fractures or tendon repair
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Chronic Pain Syndromes
- Neurological Conditions
- Balance and coordination problems
- Shoulder pain
- Sports injuries
Hydrotherapy can be used in isolation or in conjunction with other rehabilitation programs. Often it is used as a stepping stone for clients to progress to a land-based exercise program.
The benefits of aquatic based exercise should not be under estimated in achieving pain relief combined with joint mobility and strength.
We have a hydrotherapy pool at our Gordon Head Recreation Centre Clinic and offer group and 1 on 1 classes. Call us at 250-595-5858 to find out how you can join in and feel better.
