Medical Exercise Specialist

Anna-Marie is a Registered Practicing Kinesiologist through the BC Association of Kinesiologists and a Medical Exercise Specialist. After completing her Kinesiology degree at the University of Victoria in 1999, she worked for several years in the fields of rehabilitation and fitness. She took a 7-year hiatus from the field to compete for Canada at two Olympic Games (2004 & 2008) in the sport of rowing.

Anna Marie de Zwager Kinesiologist Victoria BCHaving returned to her career as a Kinesiologist, she is actively involved in continuing education and courses that can help her expand her skills and knowledge to help those recovering from injuries, illnesses and accidents.

Anna-Marie has experience with people of all ages in the realm of rehabilitation and functional exercise therapy. She creates and delivers functional play therapy programs for children as well as gym- home- and pool-based exercise programs for adults & seniors. Since returning to the field she has discovered a new interest in working with seniors and those with neurological conditions to help reduce the incidence of falls and improve function and independence in their daily lives.

Her personal experience as a competitive athlete combined with her work experience with people of all ages, levels of function and goals helps to round out her knowledge and skill in the area of rehabilitation and fitness.

Anna-Marie is excited to be part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team of practitioners at Shelbourne Physiotherapy in Victoria BC. She will be providing pool & gym based exercise rehabilitation services at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre location. Private and semi-private sessions with Anna-Marie will include a full functional assessment and provide you with a customized gym, pool or home-based exercise program. Individualized programs may be either supervised or independent, based on your needs. Anna-Marie will also be teaching aquatherapy classes and seniors group exercise programs for those looking for progressive and directed programming in a semi-independent environment.  Anna Marie has a special interest in vertigo/balance disorders, which exercise therapy is very beneficial for.
